WHAT TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS ARE SAYING ABOUT WIGGLE AND OINK...

"Jennifer Poulter has written a charming little picture book that explores friendship & being unique. Interestingly, she has approached the interactions with the opposite gender from a boys perspective, showing that it's ok to show your feelings if you are a boy. A cute little book all children are sure to enjoy."

"Wiggle and Oink by J.R. Poulter is a fun children's book about two piglet friends named Wiggle and Oink. Wiggle and Oink did everything together: they played together, they sat together at lunch, they walked home together. They were the best friends ever. However, the two little piglets are very different, and sometimes their differences cause problems. One day, Oink noticed that Wiggle was looking at a girl piglet named Pigeletta. Oink tells Wiggle to go for it. However, Oink says it a little loudly. Pigeletta notices and turns around. Wiggle did what he always did when he was nervous: he wiggled. How will Pigeletta react?

I really enjoyed reading Wiggle and Oink by J.R. Poulter. The book is very well written and descriptive. I especially liked the way the last few pages are written, because they're written in the form of a question. The characters are all very likeable, funny, and people will definitely be able to relate to them. The book has some funny parts. I liked the way the book is written in different fonts and font sizes, and sometimes the writing is at an angle, because it matches the fun theme of the book. The pictures by Olivia Pinto are very well drawn, and clearly depict each scene. The pictures are adorable, and very colourful. The story is well developed and thought out. This is very creative, and a fun read. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially young readers."

What went into creating 'WIGGLE AND OINK' as a designer...

Once Olivia finished the illustrations I designed every page to fit US letter size of the final story. We originally designed this story to comic book size but then discovered the size was not available for global distribution, so we had to re-design it to US letter.

Added colour and texture and images to the background to deepen the story and context, for example I added the tennis court so the characters weren't floating on the page and added a tennis ball hurtling towards Oink's head to create emotion and flow between the characters different personalities.

Designed text that reflects the emotions of the characters and improve the dynamic of the story. Decided where the text should go and how much text on each page.

Engineer the pages and page turns... finalise placement of the images in a way which best tells this story. I would ask myself questions like 'are the characters facing an appropriate direction to move us through the story?', 'is there a better way to engage the character?' plus constantly being aware of the intricacies of publishing the actual book to the required printer formats.

Pictured below are some of the image files I received (on the left hand side) and the final image designs (on the right hand side).... the last image is one where I was playing with us just for fun.

I also get to create products using the images and style of the story.

I love the idea of creating a reader experience rather than just saying: 'here's my book, buy it!'

It's about snuggling down beneath blankets, sipping on warm drinks and escaping into a world of colourful pages and imagination.
